so last year my lights started dimming.......at idle the dash cluster would shut on and off..............figured it was the stator.......pulled the plug on one headlights got me through the rest of the year.....other day i cleaned the powervavles dropped one of the fasteners down by the carbs and had to pull the air box to get it........fired it up with the air box off to get the below 900 idle for adjusting.......noticed the spring protector on the oil feed line was arcing to the clip which holds the line to the bulkhead roughly under the carbs......im gonna assume that the harness under the motor has worn through cause i cant really see much that the spring protector could be coming in contact with.....has anyone seen this and has some insight or am i yanking the motor?......really wished it would have just been the stator

Very common problem with the viper. Due a search for wire harness rub through and you can read till we get snow ( that could be a while). The short of it is you dont have to pull the motor. Unhook the harness at the headlight harness connection on the hood. Tie a string to it so you can use that to pull it back through. To make it easy pull carbs of cage boots. Then pull harness through under motor on pto side. Their are a few bendy wire clamp things that hold the harness to the belly to unhook also. Repair harness and pull back through. Guys use that wire loom stuff to prevent it from happening again. Do the search tons of very detailed posts on this. Should take ya no time at all to fix.

Alot cheaper to fix the harness than replace the stator. Just sayin.

did u test the stator with a multi meter? Easy to do to add some reassurance that ur stator is good. I recently had a viper come through with both a rub through and a bad stator.

Always wondered what to call those, now I know !!!super1c said:... bendy wire clamp things ...
Good advice above. Just tie the string, pull the harness, inspect and fix any wire damage issues. Very easy to do, just takes a little time. All it takes is some string and electrical tape.
Watch for any wires that bend easier than they should there may be a break inside the insulation - just something to look for.

Just did the string trick got out the harness and it looks fine (completely stripped the tape and casing) but found the wiring up at the handle bar cover has black tape and barrel connectors and open insulation etc etc (completely butchered!!!)
I will repair this but now I'm wondering about checking the stator. Can anyone confirm that the small connector out of the stator (small gauge wires white w red tracer and white w green tracer) should have 184-231 ohms between them at 68*F. As well as 0.36 - 0.44 ohms on the three large guage white wires in the other larger connector which connects to the rectifier/voltage regulator???

the small gauge wires are for the pickup coil, disregard those, stator wires are the three large white ones. You are testing out dead on to manual specs.. .36-.44. Make sure stator wires are not rubbed through or soldered onto one another.
Sounds like it could be in the cluster under the handlebar, or possibly cdi

Famous last words " I did _______ to get threw the rest of the season" I have put the whammy on my wallet more times than I care to admit thinking it was one thing and only further fried parts. Has left me quite gunshy after last seasons burndown on the sxr. I would fix the issue at the handle bars first. Regardless of stator or cdi that has to cleaned up anyways.

since you have your dvom out to check the stator i would also recommend doing a voltage drop test. this is a very easy way to check powers and grounds. on my 03 viper i found that the ground wire on the right front motor mount was coming apart.
