First post on this excellent forum. I did recently buy a 2000 sxr 700 as a spare snowmobile, mainly because of the beautiful sound. The sled has runned 6500 miles, probably with very little love and caring, which is due to how durable and reliable these sleds are I suppose.
It starts up alright and runs quite ok, but I guess it is about time with some proper maintenance. I`m thinking of bearings for the crankshaft, complete service on the clutch, and maybe some new gears and bearings in the gearbox.
When riding the sled, it feels like I`m sitting on the ground. Even though I am close to 200 lbs, this can`t be right? Will it help with new shocks alone? The track is worn out, no traction at all. Most riding is on windpacked snow, some powder now and then, will 1.49 inches be enough?
Is there anything else I should do to get the most out of this sled and avoid any breakdowns? Any response is highly appreciated!

First off, Welcome!
If you've got a few minutes, check out the "How to tune your ProAction" video. I think it's in the FAQ section on the main page. That'll get you started with an understanding of how the suspension works if you're not already aware.
Sounds like your on the right track as far as good preventative maint. Pictures are always a big help in determining what the problem is. Also read over BTV's How to set up your suspension posts in the FAQ area. Really knows his stuff and will get you going in the right direction. If you're unsure of something, just ask. Everyone on here is willing to help. That's what makes this THE BEST site on the web.

I'd also consider pulling the rear Skid out, and making sure all the bearings are good, and check your Bogie wheels, replace whats needed. New Hyfax likely needed.
I don't think you can put a 1.5" track in that sled without changing to the 7T Drivers on the Driveshaft. I have a 97 Vmax XT, and have a 1.25 Ripsaw on, with now clearance issue's. Great track on the Hardpack, but I'd like a 1.5" for off trail stuff.
Go through the Carbs, and Clean them, Maybe consider a ring job on Pistons if you don't know when the last time was....

check the jackshaft bearings, mine on my 01 needed replacement. the chain on mine was stretched out also. the cup on the recoil also cracks on sx's. new hyfax when you pull your skid to change your track. adjust oil cable, mine is at 22mm and my plugs look great. this is all stuff that my brother did to mine, [5000miles] and it runs absolutley great, could'nt be happier.

Replace the speedo bearing for sure. One day you will be drving along and you will have no speedo. Its no fun to do with the skid not out. it can be done but as long as your pulling it its nice to know its done.
