I am working on my cousins 98 SRX and he has no speedo . My question is, is there a key that goes in the speedo pick up or does it work differently? the reason I ask is because the hole in the middle of the pickup is round and there was no key in it or the drive when I pulled it off. He didi just purchase the sled and the previous owner may have pulled to keep milage down. Thanks for any answers Jason

Hi Jason,
I just got in the house from replacing mine, and I had the same question you had. The part number you want is 8K4-47715-00 known as a connector and it costs about 8 bucks.
When you get it, you will see that it is actually made up of a strand of wire that is wound around and around and it has a taper on both ends. It is a very weird part and I have never seen anything like it.
It can be a bear to get out if it is broken off inside of the bearing on the drive axle. I got lucky because mine was all frayed up ( because the speedo cable is shot apparently) and so it came out as a mess of wire. There was a little bit left in the bearing, which you can not see, but if you go to put it on and the speedo cover doesn't snug up, then you will know there is some junk left over from the old connector.
So I had about a quarter inch of frayed up wire stuck in the end of the bearing. I took a drill bit, and twisted it around in there by hand until it became caught in the bit, and then it was real easy to pull out. You will have to play with different size drill bits.
If you don't know, you will not have to pull the secondary off. There are 3 bolts and you can reach them all with a deep well socket. Disconnect the speedo cable first and then unbolt it and then you will see what you are up against.

Yeah, I just saw the picture you posted. That is the part that I specified the part number for.

what about the pin that I have circled? this part was completely missing when I pulled it apart.

Yes, what you are calling a pin I am calling the connector. It is weird because as I look at the part number that was on the bag, it says 8K4-47715-00, but on the bill it says 8K4-47577-00. Anyway, you know what it looks like so match it up when you go to the dealer.

I just pulled the part circled out of my 96 vmax and either it is to long or there is a broken piece still stuck in there. Any suggestions on how to get the rest out?

sorry I just read your drill bit tip. What size were you using? I tried a few but they wont bite. Also could I use a small one on a drill at slow speeds or will that mess the hole up. Or could I even make it worse if I can't get it out at all?
You can still get the drive pin from yamaha I got 1 for mine last season looks just like a speedo cable but the ends are tapered it's about an inch or so long.lowmilevmax said:sorry I just read your drill bit tip. It feels like the speedo key is broke in the square part of the drive shaft. Which makes me think that it wouldn't lock into the drive properly.

spray wd-40 in it and let it soak..than try drilling it. keep doing it till it comes out... it will come out cause i had the same problem this spring.

Got it out. It took about an hour of picking at it with tiny drill bits and pick sets but it is out. I pulled the key out of my 96 xt and the speedo works now. so I will go to the store and pick up a new one in the morning. Thanks for all the help Guys. Jason

Glad to hear you got it out. And it didn't cost you an arm and a leg for parts.
