I bought a 99 SRX 700 late September for $1500 with 2500miles on it. Compression was 131-132 on all 3 cylinders, aftermarket exhaust, and a comet clutch.
We finally got some snow in Northern IL yeasterday, so I took it out for the first time with with a friend that was riding a early 2000's Artic Cat ZR800 that is now 890CC's.
So far so good, and this thing really moves. I didnt get a real good oportunity to line up with the ZR800. Coming around a corner at 20mph he was about 2 lenghts behind me, I heard him get on it so I did the same. Up to almost 100mph he was not able to gain on me, and then we had to get on the brakes.
Question
About 20 min later he ended up driving through a drift, and got sucked down in to a ditch, and getting stuck. In the process of trying to get out he burned up something with his clutch/belt. I noticed when he gave it throttle that the track was not spinning, so I told him to kill the motor. We poped the hood, and the belt had a TUN of slack in it. It was dark so we couldnt see exactly what was going on. After letting the sled cool down, and reorientating the sled in ditch so he had a better chance to get out, he got it started and was able to drive it out. He said it didnt feel right after we got it out so he drove it back to his house. He said he could hear a slaping sound, amost like the belt was hitting the belt guard. When he got to an open stretch he got on it a little bit, and he said it went away. We poped the hood back at his house, and the belt had no where near the slack it did when he was stuck in the ditch. Does it sound like something in the clutch is hanging up, and causing his issues?

"he could hear a slaping sound" sounds like a spot burnt on the drive belt which happens when the track was not turning.
He said he was going to go pick up a new belt today, so hopfully that will cure the slaping sound. I was just really supprised how much slack the belt had in it when we were on the side of the road compaired to back in his garage.

one of the cords probably ripped out and was slapping against the clutch guard
Sounds like the secondary was stuck open.

X3. Secondary open. When he gassed it, it pulled the belt down it the secondary, but it never got a chance to ride back up on the clutch because he was stuck. Then he probably smoked his belt by trying to move it. Like taking off in 3 gear in a car, u gonna have to ride the clutch & it will prob barely move.

x4...... the belt was probably way down in the secondary, aka all the slack.
Thats how you get slack when chaging the belt...twist the secondary and let the belt drop down
New belt is never a bad idea anyways....good peace of mind
