Trying to pull a gas tank that had the screws over tightened. One of the screws that goes in the side of the tank to hold the shroud on wont come out. The insert in the tank is spinning. Anyone have any tricks to get one of these out? I have tried pressure between the tank and shroud with no luck.

I use a door panel tool and put a lot of pressure under the shroud while turning the screw. Be sure to use a #3 Phillips. On one sled I used heat, but be careful if you resort to this method. The plastic will begin to melt if you get it too hot. Jigaloo, Deep Creep, Kroil, or PB Blaster can also help.

If you have a helper, have them apply significant pressure and them tap the screwdriver with a hammer as you turn it.

Well I gave up and had to drill the head off the screw. Anyone have expirence with trying to get the insert in the tank to hold again? I am thinking heat to it might melt the plastic back around it.? I still have to get the rest of the screw out also.

a little late, I know, but when I had to do that on my old 97 600sx, I used a soldering iron. being careful, I held it against the bolt head and I was able to heat just the bolt that way. worked pretty decent. now you know a new way for next time lol!

The soldering iron was my plan for today. Hopefully it will melt the plastic back around the metal insert to hold it tight again and let me get the rest of the screw out at the same time.
