i rebuilt my chain case a few weeks ago and since the rebuild i noticed a small amout of oil leaking out from some place around the case.this is all with no time on the new seals and bearings. i did reuse the big case oring gasket. do you guys use any sealnt on this oring like yamabond or just install dry. it must be the drive shaft seal or the oring but i just want to know if some sealant should be tried or if i should take the case out and reinspect the drive seal

did you smear a little bit of grease on the driveshaft hub, part that intersects with seal?

drain plug tight?

I would think you can take some brake clean, spray it all off and blow dry with compressed air and then look for your drip from the case, should be easy to find.

i did use a small amout of oil on the new seal+hub that sits inside of it. the drain plug is also tight. the case is clean and dry all around from what i can see, unless it is leaking from the verry bottom wher i cant see it.
it is a verry small amout of oil but every time i clean it up the next day its back. it is also cold out so i am thinking when i get things warmed up it could leak worse.
have you ever seen a cover leak?

only seen the cover leak if you didnt get the gasket on the lip of the case. You can pretty easily check it and not make a mess. take out muffler, then roll the sled on to its left side, remove the cover and check gasket, the oil will lay in the back half of the case and not make a mess, if you think its cimin from the bottom then you might not have got the seal on the lip of the case and thats your problem. theres like little tabs on the gasket make sure they are not folded.

where is the oil showing up outside the bellypan or inside ? through the drain in bellypan or on the track side ?

i took the case cover off tonight to check things out and it all looked good i think. if im not mistaken the oring would be pretty hard to mess up right.

good tip by the way with putting the sled on its side to check it out without a spill like exxon valdez

it shows up in the belly pan. it will adventually reach the small drain hole in the belly pan if it goes for 3 or 4 days

o ring could be chaffed or cut somewhere and that could be the cause of your leak. other wise any dirt sitting inside the bevel where the oring sits could cause this too.

Is it just from when you changed it and it ran somewhere in the chassis and is now slowly dripping out?

i had one leak pretty bad and there was a blizzard going on when i found it so instad of not rideing i packed the cover with grease and rode like that for a week or so til i had time to change it out and found the case was broke on the very bottom hairline crack

Mine leaked after doing a track change, got a new cover gasket and that solved the problem, they get squished and dont seal over time.

i was thinking the same thing. it has been squished together for 9 years now and has probably been on and off a fews times too. i am going to get a new gasket and try it out.
