Sorry to hear, that stinks. And only if you would have known, this whole problem could have been avoided. But like you said, got to get them wrenches out and get her going again!

was there evidence of it being repaired before? those steering shafts where prone to breaking especially when a riser was added. mountain performance ( i think) used to make a reinforcement kit for them.

yeah it looked like it was welded once. And it does have a two in riser on it. Im gonna sleeve it and get some good weld on it. This wont happen again

That looks and sounds all too familiar to me. First night of riding my 700sx back in 2007. The bars broke off in a turn and I sideswiped a tree. I bent the trailing arm and the radius rods on that side, also broke the windshield & gauge pod. When I had my buddy weld up the steering column, we both noticed that the break in the column had some rust on it, meaning it had been cracked for awhile. Since then I've broken the steering column a second time, this time I had a 3" riser on it. But I've it fixed real good this time. We used a piece of solid round stock in the steering stem when it was welded back up.
