My 99 vmax shocks are on the way out after i get off the sled it stays down, they bottom out no matter what setting i have them on etc. When i look them up to buy online through the parts finder it shows the shock and spring altogether. my question is can i just buy the actual shock?

thanks,
jake

get the Royal Distributing catalog or go to their web site. They sell all kinds of shocks.Just match up to yours from eye to eye and make sure diameter is close and you will be able to re-use the springs.

Your springs should push the sled back up after you get off of it. You're shocks are likely on their way out like you say, but unless they are binding up themselves, you likely have a lot of other binding going on in the suspension outside of the shocks unless it has been rebuilt recently and maintained to keep it loose. (check the tech section, good info on rebuilding and setting up suspensions)

There are many pivot points in these suspensions, with a lot of rods, collars, tubes, bushings, etc that are supposed to move freely within themselves. The grease fittings don't get them all. That said, when was the last time it was greased, I believe there are about 6-7 fittings, and did it take grease well and squeeze old grease out the ends?

If it has steel bodied shocks, a good option is to ditch them for some aluminum body rebuildables of the same length (SXR, Viper, some XTC/Deluxe models). May need to verify the mounting bushings/spacers needed, and can likely find some decent used shocks on here that the owner can attest are still working ok, or just get them rebuilt for $25-$50 per shock +shipping if you don't have anyone close enough to you to rebuild.

when i get off the sled now it comes up, but, not all the way - last yr it came up almost all the way and now whatever setting it is on it seems to be bottomed out whatever type of riding.

it gets greased every spring and a couple times through the winter (whenever i have it out ice fishing and the lakes are slushy i pump fresh grease in).

how hard is it to take the springs off of the old shocks and put them on a new shock.

I would replace as a shock/spring unit and be done with it. Springs do get tired from Use/Abuse.

I think the vmax came with the non rebuildable shocks so you need a spring compressor to remove the spring. I would just find a used set of shocks from a viper, sxr or xtc as they all used rebuildable shocks, plus they work much better.

You can use worm gear clamps to compress the coils enough to get the shaft collar off. Make sure to use at least three or four clamps to help distribute the force of the compressed coil. The more clamps used the safer you'll be and less likely to scratch the paint on the spring.

I think there might be a thread in the tech seciton for building your own spring compressor using a lever vs. compression bolts.

As SRX700C suggested - I'd pull the skid and I think you'll find more than just weak/binding shocks.

I bought a replacement for mine from Royal a few yrs back, and its been a very big improvement over what Was on there...Shock was done, and bottomed all the time....
