Wondering what the value of a 1981 SRX 440 in MINT shape with 1200 miles might be ? All factory updates done. Runs flawlessly, needs nothing to show or go....Anybody looking for one ?
Let me know....Thanks guys....I am in Oregon

Thanks guys...I posted unit on Vmax-4 site now also...Very unique sled with ALOT of conversation around it....Makes my Free air 1973 El Tigre 340 look very antique....Yamaha sure put alot of nuts and bolts on this sled ! Totally over-engineered in my opinion....Very stealth looks though...My prediction is that the value of the 1981 SRX's will soon head north....

81 SRX IS A FUNNY SLED TO PREDICT. YAMAHA MADE A MILLION OF THEM, MANY DID NOT LIVE AND SOME DID. SLED HAS KILLER LOOKS AND IS FAST AS HELL. WHO KNOWS. I THINK THEY WILL BE HEADING NORTH. 3:16 (yammie tony)

MINE STILL LIVES. 100% 81 AND LOOKS LIKE A MILLION BUCKS. I RAN 104 mph ON LOON LAKE IN 1991 WITH THAT SLED on radar in a 1000 f.t. . JEFF FORNIER OWNS IT TODAY. 3:16 (yammie tony)
holy crap! lol. i didnt know they could be that potent utilizing the 440 motor modded or not. impressive...YAMMIEGOD3:16 said:MINE STILL LIVES. 100% 81 AND LOOKS LIKE A MILLION BUCKS. I've never ridden an 81 but a buddy of mine and his brother bought 7 of them after the recall from a local dealer. All had their engines beat on with hammers, punches etc in some fashion or another by Yamaha and didn't run. Parts could still be had and were cheap cuz all the sleds were being recalled. They rebuilt them all, sold 4 to pay for their investment and kept 3. The brother still has two. My buddy has had all the 440 SRX's over the years and says the 81 was as fast if not faster than any of them. He still has and races his 77 and says it was quicker than the 81 but the 81 would take it on the big end. He's not sure but figures if both engines 77 vs 81 were in the same chassis it would be a real close race. He might even go with the 81.
If you take Yammie's best 439 cylinder, put it up side down next to an 8M6 cylinder and compare the transfer port volume it's quite a difference. The 8M6 is huge in comparison. It has always made me wonder what can be gotten out of one in the right hands. I've heard that #'s of 120hp+ can and have been gotten but those that build them seem to be real tight lipped on secrets.
Cool sleds, cool engines.
I think the first MEAN!! looking sled built. Wicked in a drop dead gorgeous sorta way.

The 81 is also the "stroker" engine of the 440's, 64mm stroke vs 59.6mm, they will make pretty big power if done up right for a 440.
81 has a bad rep, but the carbs were most of the problem, put std round slide carbs on them and you didnt have to carry a couple pistons in the tool box anymore. It was the lack of the mid range tuning available with the butterfly carbs that did all the damage, same on the phazers. As soon as you hopped them up, poof they would munch a piston in the midrange no matter what you did, ran 110 pilots, drilled out passages, big jets, etc. till you changed the carbs, then it lived forever.
Like Phil has noted, the cylinders are huge!!

81 SRX WAS A HOT SLED. I REMEMBER DEALER WHO I KNEW FOR YEARS TOLD ME IF THEY DON,T BLOW UP IN TWO WEEKS WHEN NEW, YOUR GOOD TO GO. I REMEMBER SEEING A DYNO TEST ON ONE, MIGHT OF EVEN BEEN BOB,s, THAT MOTOR WAS A BRAVO UNTIL 6000, THAN LOOK OUT, 88 HP AT 9250. THE 81 SRX HAD MORE HP THAN THE 78 SRX, THE 79 SRX AND THE 80 SRX. I ALSO BELIEVE IT HAD MORE THEN THE VMAX. OF COURSE HAD MORE WEIGHT THAN LEAF SRX,s. MINE FLEW, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT WAS ABOUT 5 OUTSIDE. 3:16 (yammie tony)
