I have what i believe is a 1978 et 250 my sons sled he blew the motor so i Pu
a used one. It all looks like its the same MOTOR until i got to the wires coming
out of it my original motor only has 3 wires coming out of it black, orange and yellow while the new Motor has 4 wires one white and orange striped, green,Brown And yellow,Also the old sled this motor came out of had a small electrical box mounted next to the motor on the bulkhead the guy i bought it from said he had to put in a new stator in.My question is can i just hard wire it
or is it that my old motor had a built in regulator in the motor somewhere and the new motor came out of a enticer that had an external voltage regulator?Or did the previous owner put in a different year Stator?

Up through 78 the ET 250 had point ignition. 79 and up had CDI ignition. This is the difference. The new engine is a CDI engine. Install the stator and flywheel into it from the old engine and you should be OK. If you had the CDI and wiring harness from the new engine installing it with the engine would probably be the better way to go. CDI ignition was less prone to problems.

i was afraid this would be the case i still have the old sled and CDI but still looks like it would be easier to swap out the stator and fly wheel i do not see where i would even begin to connect the new harness .I will try to look at it again tomorrow and see if the just using the harness from the old sled can be done.thanks for your help.

looked at the wire harness from the old sled and it looks like the wires colors and sockets should match up just from looking at it .Is there any possible damage i can cause if i misconnect something there is also some kind of sensor or something on the right foot well does anybody now what that is and should i take that out and replace it with the one on the salvage sled. thanks

well ran into another problem the ignition switch thats on the sled has a 4 wire socket while the replacement harness only has a 2 wire socket seems the new one is a simple on of switch could i just rig something up in order for the switch to turn on or complete the ignition circuit with the ignition switch thats on the sled
