Hi all,
Picked up a '99 MM 700 the other day - pretty much stock other than triple piped (Bender). 2100 miles, runs great and all that. My concern is RPM range - I went out back in the pasture - 6" of crusty snow - and it just seems like it's running at higher rpm's considering what the speedo is telling me. For example - 30 mph at 5000 RPM, yet only 45 mph pushing 6500-7000 rpm? That seems awful slow for the RPM's on a 700 triple. I don't know if it's in the gearing, in the clutch or just simply the way it is. I admit I'm a rookie when it comes to the internal workings of sleds - I know per the manual the belt is okay and doesn't need spacers. I don't have a clue on the jetting - what's in there and all that, or even what it was set up for. Elevation around here is 3200 - and that's roughly elevation of where I bought it. Would think it would be jetted for 4K - maybe upwards to 7K. I pulled the plugs tonite - the sticker says to use NGK BR9ES. The clutch side and center holes both are Champion RN57YCC, and the third hole on the brake side is an NGK B9ES. Not sure if that's different then the BR or not. All plugs looked fine, and the machine runs great. It just seems like I was wrapping it up and going much slower then anticipated at 7K RPM. That wasn't WOT by the way - had room for more, but was running out of pasture. Sound normal to you? Also, where is the redline or upper end limit on these?
Thanks in advance. Rick

sounds about normal for that sled in your rpm range but perhaps a bit too much rpm in the midrange. not sure what target was for the benders rpm wise but it seems as though they were close to stock numbers.
you should be engaging around 4000 with a full shift at 8300-8500(this on my 01 with benders) sounds like you may be a bit "wingy", so watch what the tach says when you pin it and hold it wide open. i had to do some clutching to get mine back in line. you may take a far reaching chance and call bender for the target rpms(good luck)
loose those champion plugs, run the br9's. the r is for resistor and you will need these, not b9's. its been my experience the ngk's will outperform the champoins, although i think those numbers cross reference. just went through this on a polaris specing champions, it loved the ngk's.
you will for certain want to know what the jetting is, what spring and weight combo is in the clutch, and where the secondary is set at.
still have the 136 on it or has someone added a longer track? gearing may come to play depending on what has been done to the sled. you need to figure out what you have and where its at, but sounds like your sleds not reaching its potential

It does engage around 4000, but I backed off at 7500 rpm as I didn't know whether that was good for it or not. Has the 136" and those champion plugs do cross-reference back to the br9es and yes I will change those out. Planning on a shorter ride this weekend - 35 miles or so on a popular trail so plenty of people around if issues occur. Thanks.

that engagement rpm seems a bit low. My 02 MM will engage at 4800 per the book, and will absolutely not upshift until it reaches 8300. The mountain sleds are geared low, not rocket ships at all. Do some research on mountain sleds. If you want to trail ride a lot, think about adding ice scratchers to keep your Hyfax from disintegrating and tracks with tall lugs don't do good on hard packed/ice trails. It's meant for being out in the powder, and that's where its the most fun!
