Check end going into drive shaft,, probably broken off... Good sign bearing is bad or going out........

I'll second that motion. How many miles on this sled and does it have the stock track as well?Whammy said:Check end going into drive shaft,, probably broken off... Good sign bearing is bad or going out........

Sleds got about 5800 miles on it.
Track only has about 1200 miles on it and the bearings were done with the track.
Once i get her home ill look at the bearing.

how can you tell if the bearing is goin or gone by just looking at it..or is there a way without takin it apart to find out..want to check my driveshaft bearing

I agree here. The end that goes into drive shaft is probably broken
I also have this problem. I checked, and I have all the parts (installed correctly I think). Is it possible for the key to strip out inside the driveshaft insert? Or a cable freeze up?

My key ended up getting twisted and by friction hollowed out the key slot. Thats a possibility, but id def. start with pulling the housing off and looking at the bearing/key.

If every thing looks okay when you pull the other end apart the you can turn cable by hand. If other end doesnt turn then your cables broke. As far as checking bearings, put it on stand. Loosen track up a bit but you the have support the droop so theres no tention on drive shaft. Reach up in the and if shaft moves around then continue tearingit apart.

After I did the track in mine, I replaced the bearing on the speedo side, was roughly 2000 km after that that it went again, caught it in time so no damage but its definately possible... And that was a Yamaha bearing not aftermarket
your meter housing is toast, i've gone thru 3 of them in my 97

finally took a look at her, seems the end of the cable came apart
Any ideas why this could have happend, I clearly need a new cable.
Could the cable have been worn out?

that is not part of the cable, that is a stem only a few inches long, pull it out of that housing and replace, really common to happen, enough so your dealer will probably have one in stock and they arent very expensive, think the last one i got was like 6 bucks.

If you guys are having problems with the speedo side drive shaft bearing and speedo drive key do what I did. Replace the bearing and drive key then drill a hole in the bearing cover inside the clutch bay and install a grease zerk. after installing the bearing cover, pump the void space in the cover full of grease. This will keep all the water out of the void space that ends up making your bearing and key rust during summer storage which is what usually takes these two parts out. I had to weld the zerk on to get it to stay in place.

Just want to say thanks for all the info in this thread and for the pictures.
My speedo just went. My bearing was changed 3 years ago with new track so maybe 1800km on it. Hopefully its just this stem which yamaha calls joint.
