Thats what my piston looked like when i burned one up two years ago. What caused that was running a head that was modded by bender racing and after the fact finding out that it was cut wrong.

That almost looks like my burn-down last year. I had a leaking exhaust manifold port. It turns out my exhaust manifold was warped and although two were tight up against the port the other one couldn't get tight because of the warped manifold. All unknown to me being the happy new to me but used owner. I lost a chunk out of the piston kind of like yours. My piston skirt was cracked also. Bummer! I feel for you, and know the pain.

lean burn down, even the pic of the good piston is on the lean side, barely any wash, so you have too lean of jetting somewhere in the fuel curve, needle setting, main jet, etc.
detonation prob ran lean
A couple of bucks

Seeings how it's lean & detonating across the board, what octane fuel was in it and how old was it?

check the jetting then..When I pu premium gas,I put the hose in my truck and pump about a gallon thru the hose because the customer before me was using regular..then I fill my container up.On the trail you will have to dump 1 gallon on to the snow first then fill up..lol
