So i bought a 97 vmax 500 xtc. Ran great for the first couple of days I had it. Then the snow melted and when it snowed again i noticed a loss in power. When its cold it runs great no problems. But when it gets warm it seems it doesnt want to go as fast. There is basically no track spin, and when i get to about 60-65mph it doesn't seem to want to go any faster. It does't bog down or anything but it acts like it cant go any faster. My first guess was the carbs, so i took them apart cleaned them, didn't help. I also noticed the plugs are some what wet after a good ride. So then i was leaning towards electrical. Now last night was out riding for about fifteen mins or so and all of my lights went crazy! If i hit the throttle the lights would go out. When i say lights i mean dash, head, an tail. It also acted like it did before the lights went out, loss of power. Is this two separate problems, or do they relate? any advice is helpful an greatly appreciated. Just wanna get back out there the snow melts away again.

Thanks, Mike

I would start by looking for shorts in the wiring. I had a hand warmer short out once and it would kill the lights and gauges would act funny. I would also check the voltage regulator, stator

Could be the stator starting to go. take ohm readings of the stator cold and warmed up after a ride or when it acts up and compare your readings. good luck ;)!

X2 on stator. Try running it on a stand another trick is to turn of hand/thumb warmers and unplug headlight. If it runns better this way even more suggest stator. If sled wasnt covered during the thaw/freeze might have got a lil water in there!

What should the ohms be on a stator? I downloaded a manual on line but I don't if I completely trust it. And I did do this. The numbers were higher when it was hot.

:bump: bumping this thread back up hopefully someone can help you with specs
ps did you record the readings you took if so can you post them.

I did a search on here and this is all I could really find hope it helps.

Okay, here's the instructions for testing the stator by Snowdad:

"do you have access to a quality multimeter? this is the first thing you will need. next thing to know is that the ohm specs for the stator are based on a temperature of 68*F.

those three white wires you see actually are coded with a colored stripe. look closer, you will see one with a red stripe and one with a green. the third is all white.

if you attach the + from the meter to the white/red and the - to the white/green, you should see 189-231 ohms resistance. next attach the + to the white wire and check between it and the other two wires and you should see .36-.44 ohms resistance."
