I have 5 Comet 102's from back in the day that I decided to rehabilitate, I actually had 7 but, after finding worn spiders and cracked sheaves I ended up with only 5. I have read that some say when retightening the spider you should use lock tight and other say a clutch will only get tighter with time and if you ever took a 25+ year old clutch apart then, you know how much fun that is..... Yamaha's service manual of which I have several different years do not show lock tight for the spider and shows 173Nm or 127 ft.lb. Comet shows to use lock tight and tighten the spider to 250 ft. lbs ! Personally, I have never seen a clutch unscrew itself from the fixed sheave and can't imagine using 250 ft.lbs. Where should the torque setting be set and would you use lock tite ? I'm half tempted to use never seize.

CHUCK BIG FAT NO ON THE NEVER SEIZE. AND 100% YES ON THE LOCTITE. I WOULD USE '' BLUE '' LOCTITE. I HAVE SEEN A COMET CLUTCH SERVICE PULLER BREAK A SPIDER LOSE BEFORE IT POPED. CLUTCH THAN HAD TO BE CUT OFF SLED. 3:16 (yammie tony)
The arctic cat service manual shows red locktite for there comet clutches.

250 Ft Lbs ?
How long of a cheater pipe does it take to get 250 ft lbs? that seems a bit much, I saw one arctic cat clutch this winter that they actually crushed the spider and broke it by trying to tighten it to much.

Chuck.. It sounds crazy but yes 250 ft.lbs and red lock tite. The tool Comet sells to remove the spider is called a GRUNT Tool! I guess now we know why.lol

JEFF IS CORRECT CHUCK. RED LOCTITE A BITCH. PRETTY MUCH '' ON '' WHEN YA USE THAT. PROBLEM IS LIKE I SAID YOU CAN NOT HAVE YOUR CLUTCH PULLER ACT AS A BIG BOLT AND BREAK THAT SPIDER LOSE BEFORE IT POPS IT. 3:16 (yammie tony)
Remember that when you take spider apart give it a lot of heat. Locktite will come loose when it's warm. Make shure to remove all locktite from windings before re-assembly (and make shure spider is not warm anymore). Red is used in factory. I have used red or green what ever is close to me. Be also carefull when tightenin the spider. if you tight it too much you will turn fixed sheave open. (just done that this week). I just use 4f long arm to tight that spider.
