What may cause this other than the obvious clamps and hose?

Just the hose. Is it the blue, green, or yellow hose? The fittings on the carb are metric.
I had this problem before and fixed it with the clear vinyl hose. Its tighter but hardens with age. Stock oem hose is the best.

What size is the hose?
Sounds like you have 1/4" hose which is too big unless you have good clamps on everything.
