Had a friend have a small fire under her hood the other day. It looks like the relay got real hot and burned the cables and battery. Any idea why that would happen? We just unhooked the battery and all was well after that. She just pull started it. When I replace it, is there anything else I should look out for?
Thanks...

Possibly the starter was staying engaged which overheated the cables and relay. A stuck or malfunctioning key switch could do that - could have water inside that shorted it or ice prevented it from returning from the start position.
Or the small wire to the relay contacting the battery cable or terminal. Was anything done in that area recently? Battery replaced?
Or the relay could have had an internal problem that caused full time contact.

Or the battery cable shorted to ground near the relay with the resulting fire causing the other damage.

If the starter was staying engaged, it could also be fried and possibly the ring gear.

If the battery leaked, flush the whole area well with water and baking soda.

Here are a couple pics. The wires that connect to it with the flat style connections look to have got real hot. The relay itself looks like the whole thing got warm as well. looking for a used or new one if you have one. Is this probably caused by a bad relay or should I look elsewhere?
Thanks
