if the temp light flashes that much,it is probably over heating.Mine years back was flashing steady when I did some wot pulls....wasn't loosing coolant..but found out the thermostat imploded on me and deformed...it wouldn't open up and let coolant circulate..I opened it up and yep the thermostat was toast..check that first.
hey hey that remember the story i told u to check blue ...........been there done that

Thermostat Failure mode
I just wanted to write and say thanks, the following failure happened to my 1998 SRX 700s. Back when mine failed the dealer and Yamaha said that they had never seen this failure so I thought mine was the only one, which is highly unlikely!
Back in 2002 my thermostat failed but my failure mode was catastrophic. The thermostat spring and retainer popped free and when they did they cut off coolant flow to the cylinder heads.
Needless to say the light came on for a few seconds until only steam was left then the light went out. A friends son was riding it at the time and thought that the overheat condition corrected so he road on for about 200 meters when the engine seized.
As we tore down the motor we could not ID the failure mode and although many parts had failed there was no smoking gun that started the failures. I had gone home and ordered all new parts for the rebuild ($2,800+ for everything but the crankcase) but was perplexed because of our inability to diagnose the root cause.
As the rebuild started (my buddies son was performing the work, he was 28 and a ceritfied mechanic) I asked my friend to check out the water pump, when he did he found the defective thermostat.
