I've never seen actual speed runs but I would say the 700sx is faster. Shorter travel skid and smaller lugs on tracks usually means faster. Jetting is the same by the way.

Kind of like saying " which is faster...camaro or firebird? Pretty well same driveline in a different wrapper. The R does stand for the longer travel suspension. I am pretty sure you can dial in either one to spank the other in stock form. Clutch tuning goes a LONG ways!
alright, well im just a teenager and i need something that i can stand up on and ditch bang without snapping my steering column on, like the exciter! and with a bit more travel, so i would think the sxr is the way to go. does anyone know the gearing differences, or their personal top speeds of each?

I have had them both and I could make my SX-R beat my SX... but it had a few more mods... I would say set up correctly they will both run similar... plus the SX-R will be way better ditch banging and tail standing..LOL

I AM GONNA VOTE FOR THE SX. DONE ALOT WITH THE 97-98-99 SX,s. THEY WILL FLY If SETUP IS GOOD. 3:16 (yammie tony)

imo, it just depends on the person tuning them . which ever sled got the better person tuning it would win.

If you're gonna bang ditches I'd go with the SXR, same motor, same chassis, some minor differences in the stock clutching and gearing, & more travel in the SXR. Oh and the 2001 SXR has the newer electronics and dual headlights.
