Hey, everyone.

One more question regarding a 97 SX 700 - Adjusting the drive belt height on the 2ndary.

For the 97 SX 700, is the belt supposed to ride above the 2ndary a bit? I have tried everything - shimmed the 2ndary, replaced the 2ndary spring and it will not rise above the 2ndary. It sits even, with the belt ribs, at best.

I've always thought that a belt should be above the 2ndary a bit, but I can't get this one to do that.

Any suggestions or help?

Thank you,
Jim.

first thing to do is check tour center to center and see if it is correct.Second thing is to check if it the right belt for your sled. Then it should adjust up.I am leaning towards your c to c measurement.

How would the c to c get off, though? Unless you monkey with the motor, I would think that should be pretty well set.

The Yamaha spec is for the belt to be .06" above the secondary to .02" below, and this is exaclty what happens as the belt wears. The belt width is 1.36" when new, with a wear limit down to 1.28". The belt height can be adjusted by the shim thickness and quantity on the 3 small screws on the backside of the secondary. Also the tip of these screws can wear, as well as the plate they ride on inside the clutch, both can change the belt height.

If you don't already have an owners manual, you can download one right from Yamaha's website. I'm not sure how far back they go, at least to the late 90's last time I checked, and much of this time of information is the same on all year SX700's

I do have a manual and actually looked up the c to c measurement. I don't have the exact tool they recommend using, but my estimate is that could indeed by off and in the extra range pulling the belt tighter. I have no idea how that could get off, though. From what I can tell, the only way to fix would be to move the motor backwards toward the 2ndary.

I have tried shimming the 2ndary and the 2 sheaves are as close together as possible. I put a new belt on it just this past winter and have very little miles on it.

It's possible I was given the wrong belt, but I will measure it as you suggest - very helpful.

With the belt not riding properly on the 2ndary and low like it is, could this also be a cause of the belt squealing? It was pretty bad when I first put it on, again a new belt. As it wore, it seemed to lessen.

Thanks,
Jim.

I have had my 97 sx since it was new ,and the belt has never sat above the sec. sheave! New belts always sat even or a tad below,

That's good to know. The manual I have does say it should sit a bit above, but maybe it's fine as is. I will measure it up c to c, but I can't see that being changed at all.

Thanks everyone for the help and advice. This thing has been a real project to get up to speed.

Jim.
