Scratched bore

I was replacing my mech seal on my water pump and decided I would replace the oil seal as long as I was down there. I got the mech seal off ok, thanks to all the threads on here about crushing the sides. I went to pull the oil seal with a hooked pick (like a dental tool) and it slipped and scratched the bore ahead of the oil seal. The scratch is real small and shallow. Looks like a hair. Any advice on what I should do (besides not scratch the bore - I know I screwed up)?

It's so small I'm wondering if the elastomer on the new mech seal will seal it. Could I put a little form a gasket on the area when I push the new mech seal in? Do I have to find a mini hone? I can't be the first unlucky guy to do this, so please chime in with advice.

Thanks!

If I remember correctly,I may have scratched mine also when I did mine a few seasons back. But seemed like it was ok,was so fine. Now my pump is leaking this season and it is bugging me now.Don't know where my leak is coming from yet, gonna tear it out in the Fall time.If you start to try and hone it..you may be in for some extra problems. That mech seal is really snug going back in.Are you doing this with the Engine in the sled or out.???

Hey Blue,
I'm doing it with the engine in. Got the exhaust out, the steering knuckle out, and the one engine bracket off. I was prepared to pull the motor, but actually it seems to be enough room so far. I think when I put the mech seal back in, it looks like a 1" socket would work to push it in and I may thread a bolt into the end of the shaft to push it on evenly.

I agree with you on honing - more probs and may get to a point where the diamond is too big for the OEM seal. My scratches are so slight I took a TINY bit of rubbing compound on a clean cloth and it looks like that took any sharpness away and they are real faint now. Man I was sick to my stomach, but maybe this will pan out ok. I still have to get the oil seal out though.

actually that stupid oil seal will also be hard to pull,I had a hard time with it also..:o| So you are doing all this because you had a leak at the pump???

Yep, it was leaking pretty good at the weep. I ordered the oil seal, the mech seal with the ceramic for the impeller and the washer for the impeller bolt. Looking back, I wish I would have just replaced the washer on the impeller bolt and saw if that solved the problem on its own. My thinking was - off season, might as well be safe. I'm debating whether to order a new impeller as their is some play between it and the shaft. I do plan on using loctite green retaining compound on the splines, but am debating on whether I should buy the new impeller as insurance.
