I just rebuilt my engine on my sled. (see sig)
I went threw the carb and noticed that I was missing an air screw, the one that is threaded into the side of the carb near the air box. I ordered on at my dealer and its gonna be here on thursday. My question is, can I start the sled in order to drive it up onto my truck, or should I just not start it all? I have not started it since the rebuild.

ummmm don't you wonder where it went? It's small but I would think you would want to know it's not in the motor? As for starting it and getting it in the truck the answer is yes. I would bet your not putting the air box back on to get it to the dealers either and you will leaner due to that than any air jet hole. Also then 500's ran super soft belts and have a boost bottle if I remember (2001 SXR-500 has boost bottle) that bottle is great because it keeps the air box dry as a bone with no gas/oil in it. My friends 500 get so much belt dust in there it looks like his air jets are missing but, they are packed solid with belt dust. You might want to get some dental tools and check that. Unless you know what happened to your air jet, they are a bitch to get out so I doubt it fell out. Doug

Something is wrong here....if they are behind the slides back by the airbox they are air screws, but you have the rack mouted flatslides(which have FUEL screws up underneath by the intake manifolds) no?

The screw I am talking about is threaded in from the outside of the carb. It is impossible for it to end up inside the carb at all if it unthreaded itself. They are rack mounted Mikunis. The air screws are mounted towards the back part of the carburator, almost right beside the rear rubber boots that hold the carb into the air box. They screw into the right side of each carb, kind of at a downward angle. If they fell out at all they would be in the bottom of the engine bay, and from the looks of it fell out of the drain hole in the bottom of the belly pan.
When I went to the dealer, we had trouble finding what it was called. It ended up being a air screw of sorts. Maybe idle or something, can't totally remember. I remember that it is supposed to be 1.18 turns out of the totally seated position.
And yes my sled has a boost bottle. As far as belt dust, never really been a problem in the air box for me. I take mine out every year and clean it out good anyways.
So after all this mess you guys still think I can start it up and drive it onto the truck. Running for 2 minutes at the longest..
