I have to take my skid On my 2000 Mountain Max out to have my tunnel welded. I was thinking about doing a skid swap at the time. I have researched on this thru the forum histories. My question is this... I have a 151 track on an extended skid right now. I have a Ekholm tunnel. Do I go for a shorter skid like a 141-144, and set it back? Or do I go for the size I have 151? What are the pro's and cons. I am looking around for the skid right now. I have not purchased one. I am looking at Polris extra lite or maybe a Cat 141 w floats. I know I need measurements from donor sled, just do not know how much brain damage I can avoid with correct skid purchase. Thanks.

either way you go beyond the stock skid(ac or poo), you will be in some fabrication along with building of new mounts at the rear. both the ac skid and the poo skid will be wider at the rear pivot to tunnel mount and also mount further back requiring new bracketry. advantage: weight savings. disadvantage: trial and error correcting the balance of the skid to get the most from it.

if you opt to stay with the proaction skid, there are no benefits in my opinion on rails versus extensions. if your skid already has the corrected geometry, and it should being 2000, look for weight savings on the skid like switching to fox shocks along with any other things you can remove.

having been on both sides of the spectrum, and having installed both poo and ac skids in yamaha mountain sleds, i cant say any one skid actually works better than another. some will swear by it, i am on the fence. on the other hand, track choice make a huge difference. read that as camo extreme.

did your sled get dropped and rolled when the aftermarket tunnel went on, or just the tunnel?

More info

First thanks for the response. I really appreciated your help. To clarify i already have an extension 144-151 on my yamaha skid. I have a dropped and rolled chain case. I have a challenger track. dropped the extra boggies, transfer enhancement kit. If I hear you correctly you do not know if it is worth the effort to modify anothervskid to fit. Just make the stock skid lighter. Correct? If that is the case do you know what the make or model number for the fox shocks that fit the stock skid? The last shock is large.

that rear shock is probably the largest weight contributor to whats left of your skid.unfortunately i havent made that step yet but i know the info is out there.

about the skids, your results may vary, but in my fleet and side by side comparisons, i feel the results didnt equal the effort. my stock mtn viper with a 151 will meet or exceed my modded srx (ac 153 skid, same tunnel as yours)with a 155 in most situations. took me several attempts to make things right, but your dealing with a different sled. by comparison, the best thing i did to my 01 mtn max was putting on a 144 camo track. night and day difference from the stock 141 yoko track. besides pipes, that sled is basically stock, and runs with most depending on rider. other sleds i run have been through similar transformations with mixed results.

the lure for the skids from other manufactures is the weight savings, in my opinion. the weight bias vs yamaha is what makes these work on their particular models. adapting them to your sled is another game entirely. i have done several, and it becomes a challenge of patience adjusting them to benefit your needs. not to mention other variables.

shouldnt take much to figure the needs for shocks. i have a skid sitting here if you havent removed yours yet.
