Remember last year I bought a 90 Phazer II? It had 7800 miles and about 115 compression in both cyls. I replaced the stock carbs with a set from a 94 vmax 600. I think I used 151.3 mains and 45 pilots and set the fuel screws to 1 1/8 turns out. The initial response on the throttle is great, (I mean ski lift great...) but then it levels off between 46 - 5K rpms. At first I thought it was the belt, it had a Napa belt... I replaced the belt and had the same results. I thought maybe something was binding in the clutch or maybe there wasn't enough wrap, but took the belt off just to rule out the clutch and it still only revs to 4600-5000. So I don't think the clutches are an issue. I did clean them before the season last year.
Anyways, should I consider new rings or try some smaller main jets. Also, I don't think the choke is gettting stuck, but what kind of freeplay should I have? And how can make sure the choke isn't sticking?

Drop the mains down around the 147.5 area and try again

Your probably rich in the main unless you have mods

Stock is 143.8 with the butterflys right? So you probably be in that 145/147.5 range with those. I'd try something similar size wise with the flats and see what it does.

Thanks guys.
I had to change nozzle, needle and mains according to the specs of the exciter sx on mine to get it right.
