I'd love to make my VMAX electric start. I've found most of the little parts spread out on eBay but was wondering I the unused connectors on the sleds wiring harness belong to the electric start system. I searched and really couldn't find anything but has anyone installed the electric start on a non-electric start VMAX?
If I missed something when searching I apologize but feel free to point me to the thread(s).

been years since i did one of these but yes, they are pre-wired to an extent.
off the top of my head, the additional parts needed that were included in the oem kit consisted of:
battery wires
battery tray
fuse holder and fuse
relay
starter wire(from relay)
misc mounting hardware
starter
ring gear
and of course the battery
there were some wiring plug changes along from the 94-95's to the 96 models. seems like you simply needed to swap some wires in the existing plugs.

That's excellent news. I assumed I'd need all the relays and trigger wires but after looking around it seemed like all the main wiring(ignition switch to battery/starter relay) was already there.
Definitely gonna have to dig into this and see what I can come up with

I did my non e start 96 vmaxx 2 yrs ago. Like snowdad said it is prewired to accept the e start harness. But if you have the harness already i.e starter relay ect it might have been done before. The hard part is the ring gear is n0t mounted to the clutch. It is on the flywheel. So you have to find the correct flywheel with the ring gear on it and change it out. Not a bad job, just takes time. Then the starter motor goes through a hole to the back of the flywheel and starts that way. They moved the ring gear to the clutch in 97. Way easier. Look on the mag side on the inside of where the flywheel is (inside engine bay, backside of flywheel) and you should see a block off plate or a hole if yours is missing. Peek in there and see if you can tell if your sled has the flywheel with the ring gear on it. If it does then the hard work is done. let us know what you come up with.

I know the ring gears not there. I looked last year when I started to kick around the idea. I found a guy locally who had the right rotor with the ring gear. Gonna have to start to put this all together.
Thanks for the input guys. Does anything other than the rotor and wiring/battery/tray need to be changed? Same voltage regulator and rectifier?

Nope you should be good. Pretty much a plug and play intall. Depending on your year of e start stuff you get the connections might not match up. But no biggie i just cut them off and hard wired the.

So I wanted to bump this quickly. I got all my electric start pieces with the exception of the battery hold down and heat shield. Now in the Yamaha parts catalog it shows a wire with what I assume is a bullet connector coming off the positive battery cable. Is this the power supply to the ignition switch? Does it need to be fused? I assumed that the red bullet connector tied uP with the relay harness is supposed to connect to this wire. Can any of you confirm that?

Man not without looking at the sled or the manual which i no longer have. Your a vip, get a hold of staggs he's a moderator. Ask for a manual if he has your year. The manual gave very detailed pics and install instructions.

Ive got the manual at home. Just didn't have time tonight to delve into it. I'll worry about it in a couple days. I'm off to MI for the weekend and will be surprising my mom in the morning with tickets to the MSU/OSU game!
