Has anybody ever replaced the needle and seat on their Yamaha triple? Just wondering after 11 years and 13000+ miles if there not sealing as good as they once did or would it be really obvious if there was a problem? Just been thinking maybe I'm overthinking some stuff lol! I clean my carbs every fall before the riding season.

i only replace them when there are obvious signs, like a bit of drainage from the overflows. usally a new o-ring helps. not really a wear item, but todays fuel can take its toll on the o-ring on the seat as well as deteriorate the needle tip.

Yeah, I had to replace all of mine last season. They had all started to delaminate on the tip of the needle. Basically the outer layer was peeling away. Ended up getting new seats as well.

Broken Needle

I burnt down the engine a couple of years ago when I broke a needle. The clip sawed through the aluminum needle I'm guessing with vibration. When I checked the other two needles they were thin and ready to break. Once the needle drops into the nozzle you will here the noise of destruction. ---mac--

Wow!! That sucks! Never seen that before. You must have been scratching your head on that one! Something else to really check. Thanks for the heads up.

Never really replaced worn out needle and seats in Yamaha triples unless there was a bad case of dirty carbs. I still have 2 97 700 SX's that have all the OEM needle and seats and well over 15,000kms on both and they run like new.

Needles and seats are wear items but not until high milage like probably 50,000+ kms or even more! If the needle and seats are worn you will get a rich running issue that may vary with conditions. Worn N&S typically leak when the sled sits causing a vivible fuel leak and / or under engine vibration which causes the rich running.
