Newer ignition in 98 SRX?

yes you can the biggest part of it is relocating the pickup for the stator. you essentially need the whole electrical from the donor sled (stator, flywheel, main harness, cdi, headlight assembly, etc).

Thanks. What is involved to relocate the pickup? Is it possible to do or would you need a case from a newer sled?

the flywheels are not the same diameter so you have to make a new mounting point. I've never done one but I'm guessing you'd need to do some fabricating, welding, drilling, and tapping. You'd also need to make sure the timing will be right with the new pick-up mount. You can get a newer case but I'm thinking there is something different with the end crank bearings too. It can all be done but it comes down to A: can you do the work yourself or would you have to pay someone. and B: would it just be easier and more cost effective to sell the sled and by a newer one with the updated system. In the end thats a decision you'd have to make. There are some old threads here on this subject, try doing a search you might get some more detailed info.

well as listed, you need the entire electrical system from the newer sled, the pod, headlight, windshield, handwarmer rheostate, everything.

On the engine alone you can run the newer smaller diamter flywheel and the new 300 watt stator, the ign. p/u coil will need to be located closer tto the flywheel as the boss on the case is too far away. you want to move it so you have around .025-.030" clearance between the magnet and p/u coil. You can either add some aluminum weld and drill/tap it or make a small steel bracket to locate it closer.

As Staggs said you can get a new case and just swap all your engine over but youll need to switch the end bearings as the locatorsin the case/bearing housing are differnt, its just the outside bearings which slip right off.
