Just looking for some opinions on a couple of machines I am looking at.
One is a 1998 SRX700 with a custom tunnel, 153" Arctic Cat rear skid, boss seat, mountain bars, lightweight trailing arms and long travel front shocks. The engine is stock.
The second is a 2003 Viper mountain, all stock suspension, SLP ceramic coated tripple pipes, Holtzman Vari-flow, and C&A ski's.
They are both priced the same with similar mileage. What would be a better choice?

I'd probably go with the mountain Viper if you are planning on using it for off-trail riding which both seem to be set up for. A good argument could be made either way, but that's my vote.

I'd vote for the srx - mostly because I despise the pro-action as an off trail suspension and have done cat conversions and know how well they work. Otherwise it's your $$ pick whichever one will work for you.

I agree with that.
that and fuel mileage would be my only arguments for the SRX. But the skid can be changed on the Viper if you're up to the task.
I don't have any experience outside the pro-action mountain viper except my 05 mtn viper. To me the suspension has always felt fine on both. I have two 04 mtn vipers and an 05 mtn viper. Suspension on the 05 stock mtn viper is different then it's predecessors. It's really a 1st generation Apex suspension...I think until around 2010 ish. I really can't tell the difference between the 04 and the 05 mtn vipers though.
I think either way you can't go wrong. I would point out that the viper is younger and in my eyes cooler looking!!! Good luck.

I LOVE my SRX'S But I would go with the viper myself. Rear skid is easier to upgrade than electronics. Chances are crank has ben addressed already BUT Viper parts prolly easier to come by.
A couple of bucks

Thanks for all of the input guys. After thinking about it for quite a while I have decided to go with the Viper and do a suspension upgrade and add a Boss seat with bar risers. I will also have to add a rear rack for a jerry can of extra fuel as I know it will be really hard on fuel with the tripple pipes.
98 srx has a lot of 1 year only hard to find parts. If you want an srx I'd look for an 00-02.
