97 VMAX 600 XT (first build from ground up)

Last year I picked up a 1997 vmax 600 xt all stock with 6900kms its actually the first sled I've ever owned. But family has had everything from exciter II's to vmax 4 750's and 800's to the last sled I drove our 02 viper. Just getting back into sledding since 02' after losing my father in a crash on his viper.

I drove it all last season, basically without a hitch, but seeing as it was an older sled and a bit dirty I thought Id give it a complete overhaul.

I didnt think of posting it on here until I had the track out as well as the clutches brakes and chaincase. But I figured there arent a lot of these 97 twins out there so I may as well post the rest.

I will get some pics up later tonight, also any help if Im doing something wrong as this is the first sled Ive done a major teardown on. Or input on design or color would be greatly appreciated.
 

Yeah post some pics I totally redid a 98 SX600 and customized it into a SSX600 a couple of years ago. Its a very satifing job.
 
sweet! i love these sleds.

i my self have a 700 but I do have a 94 600 that i built to the tits. im now going a new route and putting a sx700 triple into it.... see how this turns out.

Going to try again tonight, but Im having a hard time uploading my pics. Anyway I hit a snag trying to remove the bearings from the chaincase and the one from the chaincase cover. After the circlips are removed should they pop out, or will I need a special puller. Only thing I have is a set of 3 jaws and my pullers for my power steering/alternator pulleys.
 
The easiest way to remove the chaincase bearings is to heat the case up and hold the case upside down and tap with a rubber mallet. the bearing will drop right out. Us a propane torch and slowly heat it up the case from the back side.
 
Well Got my rear skid taken apart, but I mangled my cheap circlip pliers trying to the bearings out of my idlers. So looks like Im going to buy a GOOD pair this time not from crappy tire.

Im gonna try to resize the photo's tongiht, Im assuming I can find the maximum allowed size for a photo on here somewhere?
 
Finally got these pictures to work, most of these pics are after tear down. The secondary is cleaned and rebuilt. Primary is next to be done, Just finished painting the hood satin black, going to have red accents (vents, belly pan, seat etc...)

Im currently in the process of shining up my skid rails and painting all the suspension pieces black pebbled finish. Will up load more pics of skid shortly.

I also included a pic of the track I picked up its a camoplast energy 1" lug with 144 pre drilled stud holes, probably only going to put 96 in for now. Any opinions for a cheap stud, mostly used for trail/hard pack road/ lake (hardpack also)

Oh another question, The old decals on my hood were so brittle and the glue basically had become part of my paint, so I had to sand down the entire hood. I now need to replace my license numbers, anybody know of a good site to get a nice set of numbers from??
 
My sign guys in the area have been known for decals that peel after about 6 months, thats why I was looking for a place online.

Painted and polished my skid, hopefully will have some updated pics of that tomorrow, had our second snowfall of the year this morning, only about an inch but its coming so I better hurry!

OR, Do you have anyone who paints signs or pinstripes in your area??? Hand painted will never peel.... and you can have a custom one of a kind hand pinstriped and detailed machine.
 
Soo ran into a few issues with my house, so the sled was on hold for a while. But now that the trails are open I needed to get this thing done asap.
It is back together now, I didnt get to paint my tunnel or trailing arms like I originally wanted. (have to wait for next year)

But other than that I think it turned out good, I will be starting it for the first time this year tonight and will hopefully get pics up tonight or tomorrow.
 
I also wanted to thank everyone for their ideas for the license numbers, I ended up buying pin striping paint and some brushes and did my own custom hand painted license numbers and a few other little touches in the skid. I may do some more pin striping on it, but I want to make sure Im gonna like it before I start painting.

If anyone has any ideas for something I could do on the hood let me know
