well its been a whale for me to create my own thread so here she goes...
i went and started the old sxr 500 to day and it was being stubborn :o| so i pulled about 8 to 10 times and then pulled the plugs. i had this surprise left for me as seen below #$%&*! i switched the plugs and 15 pulls later she fired up and ran fine one the jack spinning the track but i don't feel like messing with it all that much if there is any thing miner i can do i can but nothing to extensive. :o| :o| :o| :o| :o| #$%&* :-| photo was taken by a iphone

Both plugs looked like that? or just the one? Did you fog the engine for the summer? If so, are these the plugs you used? Carbs clean? Did you try brand new plugs? What do the plugs look like after it ran good?

Ouch! Good thing you're getting to this stuff now though. Winter IS coming quick (and as you know, WE ARE getting snow. LOTS of snow! I too am wondering about the fogging / plugs question, which could very well be a need to run it out on these plugs, throw in some new ones, and see how it goes from there. Keep us informed... would like to find you on the trails up north this year!

never fogged it the motor these are the plugs from last season. i put my spares in and cleaned those up for spars i haven't cleaned the carbs. yes both looked like that i heaven't pulled the new ones yet i still have to get a new belt and clutch springs and give it a good cleaning to, i will take a pic of the plugs tomorrow i only ran it for abut 15 min today but was having the track spin so i will check tomorrow!... yournytech, not to many people have a sxr 500 around here a lot of 600 and 700s i think i have seen 1 other 500 like mine in my 3 years of sledding so it makes me feel rare!lol.. so you could possibly see me!

It's still to warm to get a real good feel for how your plugs are going to look. Go for a nice ride when it's below freezing out and then look at your plugs to see how things are doing. That will give you a much better picture. The warmer it is the richer a sled will run.

Yeah that's true, I don't think I have to worrie about it to much. I need to get new springs, a belt and give the clutches a good cleaning just need to get my stepp farther in sled mode. :(

clean them carbs for sure/should always drain carbs of fuel before you store the sled, gas may sludge up inside and block pilots and or jets.Should be fogging the motor or at least put some oil down plug holes and turn motor. This just ensures that maybe the motor will last a little longer before she goes KABOOM!! on you..get wrenching now and clean the carbs..

x2, i believe it is roughly for every 20 degrees of temperature colder it is, 1 jet size bigger is needed. for example, if you have a 145 main jet @ 0 degrees and you have a -20 day outside, Technically you should have 146 main jet then. thats the science behind it, Im not preaching it, its just something i learned a long time ago. obviously your not going to change your jets on a day to day basis. moral of the story is sxr70001 is right, it wont due much justice if its 50 or 60 degrees outside while testing it, because then its going to run quite rich on you.

my sx500r plugs looked like that when run on the stand every summer but they where right on temp all winter.

All 3 plugs looked like this on my '01 sxr 600, i just got it into the garage last weekend to get her ready for winter, definitely gotta clean the carbs and look it over good. I left some gas in it for storage but ran a healthy amount of star-tron, ethanol treatment through it before i put it away in the spring. Mine had a hard time starting too, put new plugs in it to get it inside. Cant wait to get it ready and get some snow!
