Hey guys, I have a 1998 srx 700 with the viper rear suspension. I have the Ohlins front shocks. I have swapped the stock shock mounts from side to side and flipped them already. My question is...Should I leave it or will I get a lot better performance with the Ohlins shock extensions? Are these the correct extensions? Will they add travel or just height? Thanks guys! -Mike

The shock extensions may help but not really going to get you much more. your limited by the spindle height and radius rod length. The viper has much taller spindles and radius rods to go with the longer shocks. Some guys also viperize the front of their srx. Simple swap as far as i can recall.

You also lost some height with those skis.

Yeah I know I lost some height with the skis but you cant win them all! I just wondered where I would be sitting with the extensions. Would it be noticeably higher in the front or is it gonna be barely? I figure right now with the brackets swapped and flipped and the skis losing me a little I am still about stock height in the front. I wouldn't mind if it sat more level but will it help with travel and handling or is it just for the look? Is it worth it? Are the ones in the link I posted what I would want?

I dont see how they could hurt anything and if it gets ya another bit of travel why not. Not out much for $40. They sound as if they are just what your looking for.
On a budget, I think the shock extensions are a great way to go. Probably not going show much in the way of ride height but should be an overall improvement in bump handling.
Also, you ask about better performance...depends on what type of performance your looking for....bump performance, cornering, deep snow..etc
Adding travel, generally helps with bumps and deep snow........cornering??...not so much
Another thing to consider, is a shock re-valve....this greatly improved the bump performance of my Ohlins on my Viper

Ok guys, I ordered the shock extensions today. For $40 why not right? I am looking for better ride quality and more height. I ride trails and fields... I don't want it to kill my handling but I think I should be ok. I could always take them back off! What am I going to have to do to put them on? Take the shocks off the sled, make a tool for clamping the shaft in a vice? I will need to take the springs off the shocks right? Is there an easy way to take the springs off the shocks? Are they loaded so they would shoot off without a special tool? Anyone have pictures of this process? I hope it all works out! Thanks guys.

Also, does anyone have a set up suggestion? Will the shocks need to be set differently? Or a set up suggestion for the whole sled?

My set up for one just like yours on a 98' srx with viper shocks was this. I sold the srx trailing arms, installed viper trailing arm, bought some spindles and steering arms cheap on the forum and used the ohlins with extensions up frt with the drop shock brackets. This set up works AWESOME! That way the shock geometry is not all goofy because I gained ground clearance from the taller tube trailing arm. This pic does not have the ohlins and shock brackets on yet, but you can still see the difference .

Thanks! What is actually considered "long travel"? At what point is it long travel? Will my sled be long travel all the way around or not?

Honestly if you want "real" long travel, it would be swapping the skid for m12 or something similar. But you have to make due with what ya have. The srx handling is what makes it great! I really cant answer that question. The skies the limit. The trailing arm sleds have their drawbacks with this unlike the a-arm design.

I don't ride my sled though and then get on a different one and think...wow my sled rides like garbage! Its nothing I can't deal with that's for sure. It may not be a nytro or rev but it rides just fine and it hauls ***! I'm just trying to dial it in with the small things that wont break the bank! Any info on the Ohlins extension install anyone?
if you can find a set of 02 rx-1 front shocks that will raise your front end up.
Where are you guys ordering these shock extensions?

Pioneer performance.
I bought these shock
I bought those shock extensions last year and installed on my SRX with Ohlins. This year I bought a Viper skid I am installing.
You do have to take the springs off. There is a shock press type thing I bought to get the shocks compressed so that I could get the O ring on the bottom of the shock off. I remember struggling a bit trying to torque the shock loose when rotating it. I put the extensions in, put some super loctite in, then tightened and reversed the the process.

Hey guys, Here is an update...I installed the new Ohlins extensions this afternoon. I tried the wood with a hole drilled through and cut in half...it didn't work. We then just used 2 pieces of aluminum flat stock and put it in a vise. Worked great! A little heat and both of them broke loose no problem! Did the whole project in no time flat. It looks better and should be better for bumps. It sits higher for sure. I am happy! Here is a picture of what it looks like now. I took it for a ride around the yard before I loaded it on the trailer. Can't wait for snow!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again for all you input and help. -Mike
