I hope I could pick someones brains....when I start the sled I can feather the choke down fairly quickly but if I even ease into the throttle it will backfire and sputter. If I take about a 5 min warmup, no problem. Either way it will smoke like crazy until it warms up. Carbs have been cleaned and properly adjusted and I double checked the cable linkage for the correct adjustment for oil feed. Do they normally smoke a lot like this??? What else can I check??
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me...

It will smoke a little more especially when temps are a little warmer it's running richer. Regardless they smoke no matter what. You went through the carbs and cleaned everything? Shouldn't be backfiring or studdering. Make sure the pilots are spotless and screens under needle jets. What are your fuel screws set at?

Also those Yamaha's like to warm up fully before any throttle is applied, just the nature of the beast.

I might have missed the screens, not sure on screw settings but I am about to pull the carbs apart and clean again so I will verify everthing.

I have the same sled and HAD the same problems you do. Your not going to get rid of the smoke but you can reduce it by backing the oil pump off a little bit. They are set pretty rich on oil, I backed mine off by about 1/4 of the spec 10,000 miles ago and have not had a problem. I use Klotz exclusively. The backfiring I had going on was from a bad reed. I replaced all the reeds and the prolbem was solved. I am finding that they should be replaced about every 3000 - 4000 miles to avoid problems. I now have over 13,000 miles on mine and don't plan on getting a different sled or reworking this one any time soon. I want to ride it until the motor splatters itself all over the snow just to see how many miles I can get out of it. It does not get ridden lightly so I am very impressed by how trouble free this sled has been. I have had only one issue on the trails in all those miles and that was (1) fouled plug. My buddies all have newer sleds and give me crap about how old and how many miles I have on mine but, they always want to ride it and I have pulled every one of their (P)ull (O)ff (L)ake (A)nd (R)epair (I)n (S)hop sleds to the shop when they fail.
