Last week I purchased an 03 Sx viper. It was well maintained with annual carb cleanings, new slides, rear heat exchanger and other upgrades. When it was started it fired right up and sounded great through the warmup no glitches.

I put it on the trailer and took it home. I started it up a few days later and it fired right up but didn't seem right, it had trouble during the warmup and died several times. It had new plugs installed according to the guy I purchased it from so I removed them and found they were B9ES plugs. These are not the plugs for this sled. I believe they are BR9ECS

1 Could this make it not idle right?

2. Could they have caused further problems?

Doubtful that plug would affect idle that much by itself. Is it possible sled had only sat for a few hours when you went to get it? Some guys swear theres no differance in the plugs other than price, I am not one of those guys. Theres a reason Yamaha switched powervalved motors to the ECS plug. The ES is the correct plug for the red head non powervalve motor. I know more than a few guys that cheap out and buy the wrong plug. If only for my own peice of mind I buy the ECS. What was the temp when you statrted it a couple days later? Warmer/wetter? A sled with safe carbs setting for running in the winter shouldnt run exactly right when its 50 degrees.

Kind of off topic but really? The Vipers take BR9ECS? We've been running the BR9ES.

But yes I second killerklown, clean the carbs. I bet the pilot jets are plugged.

The plugs installed on the sled were B9ES which I believe are for a Phazer. I use BR9ES in my 96 VMax is this the same plug for a Viper? Doesn't the R represent the use of a resistor. Will operating without one hurt anything.

I will use the correct plugs from here on out.

Yes it was warmer around 50 degrees. I was worried that the use of a plug without a resistor could cause damage.

Yah the "R" means resistor which limits radio interference, shouldn't run any different though but it is a good idea to run the proper plug. Probably needs a carb cleaning as others have said to fix the idle problems.

Your on the right track, BR9ES is the Viper plug, not ECS, and ditto on cleaning the carbs. Make sure you look through the pilots and can see a nice, round hole when done. MrViper has a good write up on it in the tech section, in case you haven't done carbs before.

Cleaned carbs all three pilots clogged. The fuel screw was at 2.25 turns from bottom is this OK? The tech page for Stock says 2. Want to make proper adjustments before I reinstall.

First time removal, it looks intimidating but really a piece of cake. Reassembled carbs and with fingers crossed fired up and sounded like a purring tiger. I guess I need to move onto power valves. I feel like with the help of people here I now know enough to be dangerous.
