steering reinforce

if i remember right I used 1/2" pipe. I used a flap wheel on a grinder to grind it down a touch to fit inside and I ground a slight notch lengthwise down the pipe to account for the welded seam inside the srx stem. by doing those 2 things I didnt have to beat it in with a hammer ( still used a hammer but not to the point of breaking things). I dont recall the exact length I used but it was long enough to get past the bushing on the steering hoop. before I inserted it I drilled 2 holes through the srx post, then when I inserted the pipe I plug welded it through the holes I drilled and welded it at the top.

driving a chunk of pipe inside the column wont gain you much, if any strength. in fact, with my experience it can actually weaken the factory connection and give you a false sense of security.

add some gussets on your stocker along with new welds above and below where the flat plate connects to the tube and dont look back.

you could do all that or just install a viper one, they are built stronger/updated then the 98-99 srx ones.

I will somewhat agree and also disagree. Only driving a piece of pipe inside the original will not strengthen much at all. But inserting the pipe and welding the pipe on top will significantly strengthen the steering tube. Adding gussets will again significantly strengthen the system.
