Just picked up a little 98 vmax xt 600 twin. Wanted another viper or like 700 trip but price too high right now. This sled is Real clean and should be a nice river/ditch/back up sled and i got a friend price on it. Question is after some searching and reading the stock belt is 89L but i have a bunch of good 8DN's around. Can i run these 8DN's on it? I also read that the clutch is not set up for the harder 8DN belt and will need changes? If so what are the changes? No mention of specifics in searches. Would like to stick to one kind of belt with all my sleds but if its best to run the 89L i will. What should i do?
I believe you should just be able to throw the 8DN on and go. Don't quote me on that though.

I have went the other way, putting a 89L in place of 8DN, seemedto work fine. Unsure of longevity as sold sled a month or so later.
did this years ago on my 97 sx when i longtracked it. dont recall all the particulars as i made many changes to it.
first thing that comes to mind was increasing the rivet mass on both the inner and outer holes, along with a spring change. i was setting for altitude so even if i could find the changes probably wouldnt help your cause. i did lots of testing to get it right.
i also went with a smaller diameter roller. dont know if that was necessary for the belt change or for the mountains.
lastly you need to reshim the secondary to raise the belt height. you want the 8DN belt to ride a bit higher in the sheaves than the 89L.
the 8DN setup worked well. like you, i wanted to have the same belts available for most all the sleds.
with this configuration and running a 141, the sled performs quite well. my wife has won several snow drags as well as my daughter. in other words, worth the time in my opinion
