How exactly do i get at the speedo gear. I keep breaking speedometer keys, due to the speedometer gear being really stiff (cable turns fine) and i was wondering if i can get into the joint to clean up the gears, or do i just have to replace it?

its on a '98 srx

Are you sure its not the drive shaft bearing? As for the gear do you think its the one in the panel or the one mounted on the side of the drive shaft?

The bearing cover on the drive shaft.

I have pulled the bearing cover and everything looks good in there. Once i got the cover off i pulled the speedo cable off of the cover with the gears in it. It would not spin using a square speedo key and pliers, so i am assuming there is something going on inside that is restricting it from spinning. Also, the speedo cable was free and felt good. The problem i have is in the 90 deg joint, just dont know how to get into it to clean things up and lube.

id just pick up a new one you'll be replacing keys all the time i dont think the speedo gear drive is all that expensive

I didnt want a speedometer anyways.

One more questions for you guys. Can anybody explain how an odometer could go backwards?

pretty sure it's a sealed unit... as for odometer going backwards? sounds like something rearranged itself in the 90 degree speedo housing?...(if that's possible?)...

Good luck, keep us posted...

(does your sled have reverse?) he.

tj..
