500/600 TWIN engine. Differences between model years ??
I would like to know in detail the differences between the 500/600 Twin engine wich could be found in:
* V-Max 500/600 TWIN
* Venture 500/600 TWIN
* SX-R 500/600 TWIN
I have heard so much rumours and stuff about these engines such as:
* Different porting
* Different crank case
* Different exhaust system.
* Different output.
* bla bla bla....
Please can someone enlighten me ?

EXCEPT FOR CC,THOSE MOTORS ARE ALL PRETTY CLOSE. THE VMAX 600 POGO AND THE VMAX SX 600 WERE ALMOST SAME EXCEPT THERE WAS A DIFFERENCE IN REED CAGES. OTHERS WISE THESE MOTORS WILL PRETTY MUCH INTERCHANGE. THE SXr 600 WAS A TRIPLE. 3:16 (yammie tony)
accordong to yamaha, in 97 the crankcase was changed for the mounts, the stator went to a plateless style, the crankshaft was changed to include new roller type bearings, the pistons were coated, and as mentioned by tony, the reed system was changed along with triple exhaust ports.
this being the differences between the 94-96 models and the 97 models. pistons were changed again on the 600's in 98 after several issues with land pin failures.

Otherwise these motors will pretty much interchange

Any more differences ?
* What about generator output since the stator was changed ?
* What about engine output ?
* Are the new type of berarings on the crankshaft better than the old one ?
* Is it possible to put the newer crankshaft in an older crank case ?

I found this in another tread:
Opinions ?
Facts ?
Dansvan said:Do the 94-96 Vmax 600 cylinders have more out of the box potential than the 97 up ones ?
Seems the older ones have larger reeds but the newer ones have the third exhaust ports.

97 and up heads also have built in spot for the thermoster that is better then the inline system the prior heads had.
The intake boots for the 96 and older are no longer available so they are getting scarce to find a good set.

I might be wrong.
Can someone confirm !?!?dnale said:There was porting differences between the 94-96 600 and the 97---> 600's.
Took different reeds, boots, etc.
94-96's had a 6 bolt reed cage while the 97's---> had a 4 bolt.

Facts ?

The biggest difference making a difference in power is the 97 and newer cylinders had the smaller more common 4 bolt reed cage / intake boots for higher velocity (so can use common Vforce reeds, etc) versus the 96 and older had the larger 6 bolt odd ball cages.
Also the 97 and newer cylinders have the two small auxillary exhaust ports on each side of the main exhaust port (more flow) that make them the 7 port design. This flows more and is why the more powerful triples are designed around.
Also the head gaskets were thinner for more compression.
