I am looking at buying a sled and want to get everyone's opinions on the SRX vs SX Viper. Looking between 1998-2002 versions. I will do mostly trail riding, but am a semi-agressive rider and will do some ditch banging too.

What are the pros and cons of both?

Srx has more performance, try for a 2000 or newer unless u get a screaming deal. Vipers are no slouch though and have better suspension. Either one can be modded to suit ur needs. Easier , cheaper, and more reliable to mod the suspension of an srx than to give a viper the power of an srx

98-02 narrows the viper down to 02 as that was first year for viper X2 on what 101 said about the power of SRX and going with 00 or newer. The vipers can get with the program as well though. The viper should fit the bill in stock form, SRX not much of a ditch banger in stock form, more of a lake/river runner. Do a bunch of searchs and read others experiences with both. If you go with the viper check in to opticool head gasket and tweeking carb settings for engine longevity or at least see if these mods already done ;)!

Great suggestions. I like the idea of getting the SRX for power and moding suspension to provide a smoother ride. Hadn't thought of it that way.

What types of suspension mods could I look into?

Since the first year for the Viper was the 02, do they tend to have more problems with them? I had heard a rumor that some of the early 2000 Vipers were prone to issues? Anything I should specifically look for?

no specific problems on the early Vipers that I'm aware of. the 02s were known for harsher valving in the shocks. 03 up had a nicer seat. 04 (I believe) and up had DCS.
the Viper S had some upgrades over the standard Viper: Ohlins, tunnel braces, pleated seat, maybe rear cooler etc. other than that I dont think there were any major updates. the early SRX on the other hand had some issues. In my opinion it would be more beneficial to upgrade the power on the Viper than the suspension on the srx if you plan on ditchbanging. trailport, head mod and clutching on the Viper will surprise you. and if you're not worried about fuel mileage a set of triple pipes.

For ditch banging, off the groomed trail boondocking, I would skip both the srx and viper. Rather look at a redhead SXR 2001 -2002. More reliability, great power for the type of riding you mentioned, better suspesion than the SRX, lighter than the VIper. Oh, and cheaper also. Bump up to a Boss seat and let the fun begin. Al
