hey lads ,
i got a question i have looked and read all that i can find on here for the last 3 hours and have not got a exact answer anyways i got a 98 vmax xt 600 twin i just picked up runs awsome love the sled
if you grab the secondary it moves about a half an inch to 3/4' of a inch side to side the bolt it tight , it does have reverse if that matters , it does not look like anything is missing and when its on the stand it spins and rev's up fine and i can not hear any weird noises . i also noticed once you have it on the stand and get her up to speed the track and suspension moves up and down quite abit kinda like a waving motion sorry for the long post any help would be great thanks in advance

there is always supposed to be a little bit of play on the shaft of the secondary, although half to 3/4 of an inch definitely seems excessive. However that being said there is probably an exact spec 1/4 in to 3/8s or 7-10mm seems to ring a bell. Honestly if its shifting properly i would leave it how it is. Also check out the tech section in regards to track tension.

I wouldn't worry about that movement, it's supposed to move back and forth. I don't know what the spec is, but it's to help keep the clutch centered as it operates.

ok perfect , thats what i thought because it seemed to be working fine it just worried me because i had a bomby and it didnt do that , its my first yammy with reverse and i thought something was messed up it seems to be shifting ok but i have not had it over 80km/h on the stand
im going to check the tension on the chain just so i know all is well
thanks guys

I would think slack in the chain is the answer. Just snug up the adjusting bolt and recheck. A little play is normal for a secondary. A lot of play is not. Good luck!

the slack im talking about is if you grab the clutch and pull and push it on the jackshaft not turn left or right i dont think that could be chain slack ? im going to check it anyways just to make sure shes tight , i think its probably just movment for it to self alighn but thanks for the info

my 95 vmax 600 and 98 vmax 600 sx are the same way, the secondary floats on the jack shaft some. I never measured it but I would say 1/4"-3/8" movement.
