Hi everyone,
I have recently bought a 01 SRX. (never owned one before) When I bought it, it had been sitting for 5 years. I bought it from my brother who bought it new in 01. When he rode it last, he said he could tell it had a bad power valve. He parked it at his mechanics garage and had it looked at. He was told he had a bad power valve and cable. He didn't have the funds to get it fixed at the time so his mechanic winterized it for him and stored it. His job has had him all over the U.S. for the past 5 years and he never fixed it. Long story short, he sold it to me and I had the valves fixed and bought a new cable. I noticed that there was no coolant in the tank, but assumed that this was due to winterizing. When I put the valves back together I was excited to hear it run and didn't put the pipes back on. When I pull it over each of the exhaust ports spew green coolant. Why would this happen? The engine has never been apart. If it was a gasket I would think it would only be coming out of 1 cylinder not all three. Any ideas? Or has anyone encountered this kind of problem before? Please tell me it's not a cracked block!!! Thanks for any input.

Im not very experienced with srx engines but it sounds like a bad base gasket. Gasket between the jugs and case. If it was a head gasket i wouldnt think it could fill the case. The big srx guys will have better imput for sure. Wait for them to help out. Just giving you some ideas.

maybe the o rings between cyl and heads have gone brittle on you.Check plugs and see if they have green on them from coolant.Hope the coolant has not leaked over the years into the crank....could have a rust issue then..if the coolant tank was empty..it went somewhere..start digging into it.

I can 99.9% tell you I DOUBT a cracked block (case actually, upper and lower) Sitting for 5 years with out running I would HIGHLY suspect O-rings between head and cylinder. I have personally seen these start to leak over 1 summer and have read on here about others having same issue. Most green antifreeze corrodes alumium. O-rings seal alumium head to alumium cylinder. Peel heads off and clean any crud/corrosion. Heres what your gonna need. O-rings (2 per cylinder) 3 gaskets between water rail and heads. Some guys take this off as 1 peice but I find easier to reassmble as individual peices. I HIGHLY recomend carb cleaning prior to even trying to start it. While you have the carbs off I would pulled the reeds/boots off and try to get a look into the bottom of motor, Sitting 5 years its possible some leaked down in there. If this sounds like to much of a hassle I would be more than happy to give ya acouple bucks and take the old girl off your hands!

Thanks you guys. I will try to look at it this weekend. Do you recommend putting in a different kind of antifreeze when I put it back together?

green antifreeze is fine, just check the bottle and make sure its safe for aluminum

Thanks for the help guys. I found the upper gasket set today, so I decided to tear into it. The two outside heads had corosion on both sides of each of the o-rings. I went ahead and cleaned up the heads and cylinders and pulled the carbs and reeds. Sure enough the crank was submerged in green antifreeze. I attached a gas hose onto my shop vac with lots of tape and carefully sucked out the antifreeze from each port hole. I am pretty positive I got all the way down to the bottom of the case on each hole. Then I used fogging oil with a straw attached and fogged the heck out of each of the rod and what I could see of the crank bearings. When I cleaned everything up and reinstalled the reeds and boots, I tore into the carbs. What a mess! White balls of goo everywhere. Now that they are all clean I put everything back together. I was able to fire it up. That was pretty exciting! It sounds like a beast. It has v-force 3 reeds, and a can (not sure what kind), it also has a SXR suspension. Other than that it was left totally stock. The biggest and newest sled I have ever owned until now was a 97 Arctic Cat EXT 580 efi. Just rebuilt that this summer. Cant wait to see the difference between the two. Before these sleds I had a 1980 340 exciter with a 440 engine installed, so the 580 was pretty exciting. I cant wait to see the vast difference in power I am told that these machines have. Are they really what people say that they are? I ride with guys that think they have the ultimate sleds. (SkiDoo MXZ1000's) I would love to see how this compares to them. Thanks again for the help everyone.

Your moving from a Cavalier to a Corvette.

I owned several 580's Zr,EXT etc before I "grew up" NO COMPARISON...I really mean that...If your ever missing the power of the 580.....Just pull 2 plug wires off that SRX!

Did the crank look rusted at all? Did it rotate pretty smooth?

It rotated very smoothly. No rust that I could see. After taking out the antifreeze (the crank was completely submerged) I soaked every bearing I could see with fogging oil. I'm sure it is not as good as a complete tear down and cleaning, however I am hoping that since it was not run like that and there is no rust, maybe I'll get lucky. Can't wait to ride on my new corvette!

So I finally got it out of the garage last night! Wow!!!! I rode the EXT 580 first, then I jumped on the SRX. NO COMPARISON AT ALL!!! That SRX is amazing. Thanks for the help you guys. Can't wait to ride it with real snow this year. We got enough to cover the grass, but that's all. Plan on some rides by Gaylord and over near Mancelona with my friends from Gaylord this winter. Maybe see some of you on the trails this year. Now I just need to adjust the power valves before the snow really flies. I haven't done that yet. Again thank you all for the help getting the ole girl going.
