I've bashed my fingers 1 too many times trying to figure it out on my own. What is the trick/order of putting them on so I don't have to be a contortionist to put the last spring on.

I always put them in the approximate spot, not quite in all the way. Then gradually get the big ends on with one spring, then the can side. Kinda have to do them all at once.

From the service manual: Install pipe #1, #3, and #2. So LH, RH, then the middle.
When installing springs, the longer hook should face forward. Vertical springs, longer hook faces upward. The last band spring installs with the hook pulling from the top.

get a long flat screwdriver, grind a notch in the side and one in the tip. You now have a wonderful spring tool. sounds like your using one you have to pull only.

I'm sorry but when you say vertical spring, I don't know what you are referring to.

by vertical springs he means the ones that go up and down........not horizontal like the ones right where the pipe meets the engine

Yeah, springs are springs, he's just referring to which direction they are installed.
