Hi guys, got my new to me Viper end of last season and addressed the carbs, jetting, and leaking waterpump all thanks to this site.
Here is my question: stock Viper had 144 studs that the owner had removed and given to me in a bag. Track is in great shape. Sled has 1700 miles on it. I attached a picture of the studs and backers. I can't identify the make/model of the plastic backer / nut. Anyone know what these are? I never had a sled with studs. Are these plastic nut/backers junk? Should I leave the studs out or put them back in? Get different backers and regular nuts instead of these plastic things? I will be trail riding in northern WI. Nothing aggressive.
If you guys recommend leaving them out, would I expect a drastically shortened track life with all the holes in the track?
If you recommend putting them back in, should I leave the ones outside the slides out and just do the ones inside the slides or go ahead and put all 144 back in?
Thanks in advance for your help. This forum is one of the main reasons I bought a Yamaha. You guys are a great group. Can't wait to put some miles on this Viper!
Thanks again.
Hope this attached pic shows up ok. First time trying to upload a pic.

They are extreme max studs and trail tamer backers. The backers are no longer made but i used to sell alot of them. The backers are only meant to be installed once since they are self threading. So i would just use aluminum backers if you put them back in.You can run track with the holes in it and shouldnt have a problem. But if you want to reinstall the studs you can do 96 or the 144.If you need backers and nuts i have them for 30 cents each with backer, nut or $1.25 each with stud, backer, nut.Where in WI are you ? I'm by Appleton.
@richierich>>Thanks for the reply! I wouldn't have guessed self threading, but now that you mention it, yeah that makes perfect sense. I'm in Waukesha, WI. The sled came from the Fon du Lac area - they may have bought the studs from you.
I checked out your site briefly. I'm guessing 30 cents each is the nyloc standard zinc nut with a square aluminum backer or something. Is there an advantage to the taller aluminum nuts or the round aluminum backers? plastic backers? I just have no experience with different kinds of studs at all. Still trying to decide whether to even stud it or not.
If I decide to pull the trigger and purchase through you - should I just purchase through your store?
Thanks again for your help.

I'm sure i did sell them.I was the top seller of them Yes 30 cents for the nylock nut and alum. backer. The tall nuts are for taller studs. You only need the regular ones.I like aluminum backers over plastic as they just hold up better and can be reused. The round are easier to install as you dont have to align them but the square offer more support.Ride the sled without and then decide if you want to re stud. You probably will since its a short lug track and will spin alot.If you ride the lakes or rivers you will forsure.Either way if you need something let me know and i'll give you a deal. Thanks rich
