How lovely finding this 17 miles away from the trailer. Didn't feel it break, didn't even know it broke until I got stuck. Then I tried turning the handlebars and fell right over.

Was going to weld it back on, but it's cheaper to buy the steering column and put it in myself. Gonna be a good learned Saturday project.

Welcome to TY, as I see it is your first post.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe you have to pull the motor to replace the steering column...

I was told the motor does not need to be pulled, but it does need to be unbolted and hoisted up out of the way to access the column bolt underneath. This is what I was told.

And thank you for the warm welcoming!

Make sure you get the updated steering post. The early ones were prone to breaking with a riser on which i see you have. Not sure which year they went to the renforced steering post but someone will. Or try a search. Welcome to ty!

That sounds correct, to me if I was that far I'd just take it out anyways.

that's where mine broke. too bad the guy I bought it from didn't put a new column in. he doesn't know how to weld either! i haven't fixed mine yet

I know this is a problem area, but I have a question. Is this something that just brakes, or does the shaft show signs of fatigue before it goes?
Mike

i would say it broke BECAUSE you got stuck.... we tend to get stronger than we know when we are stuck and pissed off... you really can't push and pull on the steering stems.

i learned the hard way on my '84 vmax, luckily it only bent, and i was able to cut a whole in the bellypan to get at the lower bolts. ill have to keep this in mind with my 01 srx

Handlebar risers tend to weaken the post also. I found a pipe that fitted right in there snug and had it welded. Much stronger now....Welding in my opinion is easier, faster, cheaper and u end up with a more strong post...

Good luck to whatever rout you decide to take

Nick

depends on the shaft, how it was welded and if it was undercut when welded, it makes the pipe even thinner. The fix is the updated one, which I have yet to see brake and has more thread area or you can drive a slug down it and have it welded.
