On my recently acquired 97 Vmax 500 XTC the schraider valve on the rear shock faces up. I think it's coming in contact with the track. Should it be facing down?

Stock position is facing down. Someone must have put it in backwards before you. Welcome to the site.
Thanks. That someone was me.....first sled. I did put it back in the way it came out though, when I noticed the wear on the track I thought something was not right. I"ve found a few things not right on this sled, but she's all buttoned up waiting for snow now!
