I put together a 97 V-max 700 triple sled last year and only put on about 12 miles. Since I put the motor in, it has a strange rattling noise. My thoughts are either a bad wrist pin bearing or bushings in the clutch. It makes the noise at idle and revved up. Any thoughts before I take apart the top end? I am trying to post a video to you tube, but cant get logged in. The project was listed under 97 vmax xt 500 turned into 700.

If you used your twin clutch may be the prob clutch off the twin had bad harmonics may have bad slides in the clutch.

You could pop the clutch off and fire it up.....Wouldnt suggest giving a bunch of throttle though. If rattle is gone at idle I would say you found your problem.

common problem for some of those to have the bolts loosen up that hold the pulley for the recoil causing a rattle. good spot to check before it eats your stator.

another spot to look is your pipe and silencer. there are screen baffles inside the silencer that have a tendency to rot out leaving debris inside and causing a rattle. might even have something in the pipe.

the harmonics mentioned earlier applied to the engine, not the clutch. the harmonics of the engine created excess wear on the weight and roller bushings. if the rattle is continuing after engagement, you could almost rule out the clutch.

Tore apart the top end, it seems the wrist pins are good. There is a slight bit of play on the rods on the bottom end. I was told by a friend to run it and think about another crank for next year. Not like we get a lot of snow in central PA lately.

Im not sure but if you can hear the rattling that clearly I doubt its coming from inside the engine...If you could hear a rattle that clearly and it was coming from inside the engine I dont think the engine would last long at all.

Id check the clutches/exhaust/chaincase first before you run it again

Muffler bearing! Had to change mine on my SRX, got rid of the rattle and the exhaust spins much more freely!! ;)!

Kidding obviously....

Like the others said, id start checking other things before you run the motor to much more..

Same thing happen to me on the same sled last year it was the center rod i bought a reman crank that was fixed at midwest crank (had to exchange mine for a core)
If i was you i would not run it like that it will gernade eventually i would call midwest crank and see if its worth fixing.
Good luck
