Hey i just recently got a 02 viper electric start and reverse, and the water pump is leaking at 1400 miles. From the research ive done on this site ive come to the conclusion it is most likely the mechanical seal on the impellar, now before i order my parts i have a few questions.

With a low mileage sled what is the likelyhood that my impellar will need to be replaced with the seal?

Should i use petroleum jelly to lube the washer seal so it doesnt rip when i tighten it to the impellar?

I noticed alot of people still have leakage after the installation, and some say to run it dry for a minute first, some say to loctite the splines, others say to let it sit overnight, is there a general consensus on the best way to avoid this that anyone has come up with over the years?

I have owned ski doo for years, and they have their own set of problems so im new at learning the tricks of fixing yamahas that all of you guys know already from years of working on these sleds, so i appreciate any help you can lend to me. Thanks

Impeller is aluminum and should be fine. There is a rubber coated washer under the impeller bolt that u may want to replace.

I firmly believe the rubber coated washer/seal on the impeller bolt is the culprit mamy times when people see leaks through the weep hole in the bottom cankcase. Whenever I have replaced the mechanical oil seal, I always replace this special rubber coated washer with a new one AND use the green loctite (low strength) on the splines. I let the loctite setup overnight before filling teh cooling system. The loctite does two things: provides a supplemental seal to the rubber coated waher and tightens up the fit between the impeller and the shaft which prevents the impeller from wobbling around which puts stress on teh rubber coated washer. You should not need a new impeller when you change the seal unless it got damaged whn removing it from the shaft. The impellers can be a pain to get off, I apply a little heat to the impeller only to help loosen it.

I had the water pump impeller and shaft out a few years ago and your going to want a set of long nosed snap ring pliers because there's a snap ring deep in there that has to come out.
