I just went through something similar with my 02 mountain max when I changed bars and had to switch to a powermadd cable. The amount of travel you get from idle to full throttle is not enough to pull the pump up on the stop. To set up correctly with whatever cable you are using is a little like this.
when you pull apart the stock cable, there is 13mm of travel to get the cable end out of the adjuster, then you set it for the 22mm +/- 1 mm. the total travel of the pump is 35mm, and that is all from the throttle on the bar, like ding said changing the cable will not change the amount of travel. For the powermadd cable I put in, first the housing end that secures down at the pump has a nut on the threads, and the hex cable end barrel. I had to take the nut off, and let the barrel sit all the way down on the cable bracket to get enough slack for the pump to be on the stop at idle. That took a little trial and error to get it done. The reason for the nut is that the cable will also work on 02 and new Cat's and needs the adjustability.
To set the cable length, first I had to un crimp the cable adjuster. They put a crimp on the outside edge so you can't pull it out of the adjuster to measure travel. I pulled the crimp out, and measured from the face of the adjuster to the bottom of the socket for the cable housing to sit in. The cable sits in 10mm vs the 13mm of the stock cable. So, for my cable to be adjusted properly I need 25mm between the cable and adjuster. With the new cable I just barely get 25mm with the adjuster bottomed out, but once the cables stretch and break in I will be able to adjust it for the 25mm no problem.
So to recap: the travel of the oil pump by measurement on a stock cable is the depth of the adjuster socket (13mm) + 22mm of exposed cable = 35mm of pump travel. Work backwards by measuring the depth of the adjuster socket of your cable from 35 and you will get your new number that you need for your aftermarket cable.
