I have a 98 V max 500. I put a new oil pump in it, I got a bout 5 miles on it and I scorched a piston. Is there any way I can see if the oil pump is working or do I have to prime the pump, was there air in the line. Little help please. :dunno:

The pump needs to be bled, also the on the first tank after changing an oil pump or a rebuild, it's a good idea to mix some oil in the gas tank, not the whole 50:1 but maybe half that. Just for insurance. The oil pump has a bleeder screw on it, simply put some rags under the pump, then open that screw up after hooking things up, and let oil flow until no more bubbles come out. Did you clean the carbs? If you post some pictures of the pistons, someone here can let you know if it's a lean burndown or if it was from lack of oil.

Was the oil pump brand new or a used one from online? Would like to see a picture of the drive tab if it was used, they tend to round out and not turn but seems a lot of people sell these used ones not knowing they are doing nothing, had the same problem.

Thanks for the info. I did put oil in the gas, maybe it wasnt enough. I will try bleeding the pump. Do I have to pull it over a few times while i have it open? And yes it was a brand new pump. I just rebuilt the whole moter not even 400 miles ago. Just one piston was harmed in it. The skirt was scored a little bit and the rings still moved. So I think I might just put new rings on it and put it back in. any thoughts? And yes I did clean the carbs. Do it every year.
