I'm having problems with registering in New York state!! I'm wondering if anyone else has a 1997 sx 600 and how many digits the vin# is? The registry is saying that it is supposed to be 13-17 digits long, mine is only eight...

Yamaha has only been using the 14 digit #'s since either 02 or 03. Anything prior should only be 8 digits. That is according to my dealer. I had the same problem with insurace on my 01 SXR700.

Use a piece of paper and pencil to trace the etched VIN and bring that in. Or take a digital picture of it.
The tracing didn't work it isn't clear enough, and I'm going to try taking a picture but the registry is saying that it doesn't match anything in there computer....so now even if I take a picture and prove it is only 8 digits they still might not let me reg...because it doesn't match anything...I don't get it....

I've registered in NY from out of state for4 years with no problems. I remember I was asked about the number of digits and told them that was the entire number and they said ok. The only time I ever had a prob was when we tried to register my dads 2 sleds in person - they wouldn't let me because they were "his" but I registered them in my name using the pencil tracing. I think a picture should work just as well. Even if the etching is tough to read it should show the number of digits. BTW my 97 SX7's vin is 9 digits 8CH-00XXXX.

Talk to a Manager at the DMV. Also Print this thread and bring it with you to show a manager. Once the sled is registered in NY, you won't have another problem.
I am a NY resident, and bought my 2 2000 SX700r's in Mass. and needed to pay NY Sales Tax on them when I registered them. NY just keeps collecting taxes on what ever they can.
