i have a 99 vmax sx 700 tripple and i got a new oil pump on and it is running to rich, to adjust it you go by the gap on the cable, if its running to rich, which way do i have to adjust it to get it to run more lean? make the gap bigger or make it smaller? thanks for any input

I could be off but if this is a tripple and your adjusting the oil cable gap wouldnt it be smaller gap which shortens the cable creating more pull on the pump. So smaller gap = more oil, larger gap making cable longer pulling less on pump. Larger gap = less oil. Someone double check me on this!

You sir are correct (super1c)*I THINK*. This is one of the things that I think yamaha engineers were laughing their arse off about. The whole process is rather confusing, I may even be mistaken on my train of thaught (i always monitor oil consumption anyways) BUT seems you pull the cable out of the adjuster and measure the gap (lack of housing) with the pump @ full bore, When adjusting adjuster your actually adjust the length of the cable housing. If I am wrong can some one please chime in and save me from myself?

If I'm wrong I'm sorry. But if you make the gap bigger you extend the length of the housing making the actual cable shorter. In turn this will hold the oil pump lever up and allowing more oil to flow at idle. Like stated in another thread can't remember which one. But the oil pump has a cam and everything over half throttle the pump is wide open. So making the gap shorter decreases the lenght of the housing and allowing the pump lever to sit lower and requiring more pull on the throttle to achieve full stroke of the oil pump. As I stated if I'm wrong I'm sorry but this is how I see it. Chris

Making the gap bigger is acheived by screwing in/shortening the adjuster housing....right? By shortening the adjuster your actually shortening the over all length of the housing...right? In effect making the cable longer...right? I am only 90% certain of this. Are you talking about the gap between adjuster and housing towards pump when cable is pulled apart or the gap in the adjuster itself. What your saying makes sense to me when applied to the adjuster.

ok, their is a lot of back and forth on here and im a little confused on which way i have to adjust it, so if i go by gap A in the link below, if i make the gap smaller would it get more oil or less oil? thanks for everyones input. this has been buggin me for a while

Making gap a smaller = more oil, making gap a larger = less oil. Keeping in mind the factory specs (17-21ish depending on sled) WONT apply to after market cable. We were all saying the same thing just stating in different ways. Super1c and I were talking about gap a, the other was talking about the amount of thread showing in adjuster so to speak.

oh i understand now. i do have and aftermarket cable. would a larger gap still mean less oil? if so i dont need a spec for it, i always watch oil pretty close so i will just adjust it and check it till its good.

Yes it would still apply. Think about it this way. If you were able to some how adjust gap "a" to ZERO this would put pump are in full bore mode and your throttle wouldnt move as it would be binding on oil cable. Now go the other way, If you adjust gap "a" to say 100 then with your throttle pinned to the bar your oil cable would have yet to even move = no oil. 0 and 100 are obivousily exagerated numbers. By adjusting the adjustment collar you are in actuality adjusting the overall length of cable housing which adjusts the amount of travel of cable inside the housing. Make sense now?
